Heartbroken Meng Chaohong was able to finally say goodbye to her student son killed in a tragic accident after his classmates arranged to have a graduation photo taken with a life-sized picture of their former pal alongside them.

Ma Yue who was studying English at the university in Chengdu, in the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province, died two years ago when he tripped and fell off the train station platform - and landed on the live rail which killed him instantly.

Like most Chinese families where there is a one child policy he had no brothers and sisters and his mother Meng, 48, never got over the shock of the loss.

But his colleagues kept his dorm room exactly as it was because it had been too painful for his mother to clear the room and they wanted to honour his memory.

Now two years later on the day they graduated they invited his mother, a journalist from Beijing, to take part in the ceremony and remembered the former colleague by posing for a class graduation photograph with the full-size cut out of their dead colleague.

His tearful mother was allowed to spend some time alone in the room and then was later presented with folded paper cranes made by the other students at University and meant to symbolise good wishes.

She said: "I thank everybody for their kindness but the biggest treasure from this day is the photo - it has really helped me a lot. Nothing can make up for the loss but such kindness helped me realise that other people also valued my son as much as I did. He touched a great many lives with his short life."
