Split Decision

croatiantimes.com

Conjoined twins Saba and Farah Shakeel have won a 16 year legal battle after judges in Patna, India, overturned a health authority's decision that weren't "disabled enough" to claim benefits.

Supreme Court judges ruled that the sisters -joined at the head - should immediately be registered as severely disabled, which will qualify them for treatment at the country's prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

Local government officials have been ordered to move the girls, aged 16, into the institute and fund the entire cost of their treatment.

Their family had been struggling to pay for the dozens of prescription drugs they need and a special diet to keep them healthy.

The sisters' older brother Tamanna Shakeel said after the hearing: "I'd tried to get the disability certificate for my sisters many times in the past but I was always turned away. I was always told that Saba and Farah did not fulfil the eligibility criteria for the disability certificate, which was nonsense."

"Farah has two kidneys while Saba has none. They can barely walk and also face a lot of other problems. I wonder who could be more disabled than them?" he added.
