Village head man Tao Zhengrong was delighted when dozens of firms specialised in making car interiors set up a business hub in his village - until he had complaints that locals had no place to plant food.
But the enterprising mayor at Chengbei village, in Xinhe township at Wenling city, in east China’s Zhejiang province, solved the problem by turning the factory roofs into mini rice fields.
He said: "Lots of people found work here so they could buy rice but some of the older people had nowhere to grow rice, so we tried it on the roof and it's been a great success.
"The roof is so high that you don't get insects up there so you don't need pesticides, and the water keeps the buildings cool in summer."
It took the mayor and helpers three days to put the earth on the roof needed for a 300 square feet field area located 60 foot up in the air.
Now other buildings are being added to the network and Tao added. "The only problem is getting the machine on the roof to harvest the rice, but other than that it's a great success."
