Surgeons faced a tall order when 7 ft 1 inch basketball player Huang Chengyi, needed to get back on his feet after a training injury had left him paralysed from the waist down.

Chengyi - from Heze, Shandong province, eastern China - had been crippled 10 years ago while he was training to join China's national squad.

Trainers believed he had sprained his waist but the injury turned out to be much more severe and Chengyi, now 34, was told he would never walk again.

Now he's in training again after doctors at Beijing Hospital in Beijing were able to restore his leg movements with pioneering treatment.

"I thought I'd never hold a basketball again. I know my competition days are behind me but I can still pass on what I know as a teacher," said Chengyi.
