Four students were sucked to their death in a river bed of thick mud as they celebrated winning university places in Chen Lu, central China.
Xu Kai and three pals, all 19, had jumped into the Yangtze River in Hubei province to cool off during the bash to toast their success.
Witnesses say they disappeared under the water almost immediately and were never seen again.
"There are some strong undercurrents in this stretch of the river and very thick mud on the bed that would hold you down once you're trapped in it," explained one rescuer.
