These hospital workers in southern China were forced to sell their medical equipment in a bizarre auction after bankers refused to give their accounts a clean bill of health.

The bankrupt clinic - in Kunming, Yunnan province - had to sell all its stock and fixtures and fittings to meet the final wages bill before closing down after running up hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt.

Surgeons and nurses demonstrated medical kit from operating tables to scalpels before selling their hospital furniture to locals at knockdown prices.

"It is harder to sell the furniture like hospital beds because people believe it has been used by someone who has died, which is unlucky here in China," explained one nurse.

Boai Hospital vice president Guo Xinyi added: "It is a tragedy because we run an excellent medical service but we have been let down by one or two investments that just haven't paid off."
