Back to Charm School

croatiantimes.com

Sloppy students in eastern China are being sent back to charm school to teach them etiquette skills.

These first year college students in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, have been excused military training so they can take part in a new course to teach them grace and good manners.

Instead, they learn how to walk, stand, talk and greet people properly in a series of lessons given by experts in traditional Chinese culture.

Girls are taught how to look more elegant when they stand by holding a sheet of paper between their knees.

And their posture is improved by balancing a book on their heads while they kneel and stand up again.

"So many young people are sloppy and lazy these days. They don't even know how to stand with grace," said a spokesman for the college, which specialises in degrees for students entering the tourism business.

"Most students have to do military training in their first year.

"But we think these skills are much more useful that marching or boot camp so we give our students a choice," they added.
