Tug of Claw

croatiantimes.com

This bizarre tug-of-claw at a wildlife park has infuriated animal campaigners in central China who've accused keepers of degrading the zoo's tigers.

Keepers dressed as tigers and members of the public poked the caged big cats with long poles through a wire fence and then pulled when the angry beasts hit back.

Officials at the Jiufeng Forest Zoo, in Wuhan, Henan province, staged the stunt to mark the country's Moon Festival, China's autumn national holiday.

"It is only encouraging the tigers to do what they would do naturally in the wild. It is good for them to be challenged and entertained," said a spokesman.

But one wildlife campaigner told local media: "It is degrading to tease magnificent animals like this. They wouldn't think it was so much fun if they weren't hiding behind that fence."
