A hapless would be robber was all washed up when he tried to swim to freedom down a river - but found the banks lined with spectators.
Crook Le Hun, 46, - from Fuzhou city, Fujian province, southern China - jumped into the water when his attempt to carjack a motorist failed and he was cornered at the river embankment.
But as the crook tried to swim away from waiting police, hundreds of locals lined the banks blocking every escape route.
"Eventually he was so exhausted he had to surrender or drown," said a police spokesman.
The man is facing attempted robbery charges.
