Austrian extreme sportsman Christian Redl has proved he is a high diver by climbing a peak in the Himalayas so that he could go underwater in the lake which is 5,000m above sea level.
The Viennese diver, 36, who holds eight other diving world records, was underwater for three minutes at the Goyko Lake in Nepal's Sagarmatha National Park, and then sent a message back home via GPS telephone to say: "Mission accomplished".
Redl and his team made the climb up the mountain and camped overnight beside the lake before carrying out the dive in the early hours of the morning the next day.
Despite the thin atmosphere, the dive was carried out without artificial oxygen – the only aid he did have for the three minutes underwater was a specially designed diving suit to keep out the icy temperatures.
Redl had trained for the dive by carrying out expeditions to mountains in his native Austria where he swam in glacial lakes before heading to Nepal.
And after notching up a successful dive at Goyko he said that he planned to return to the water for a longer trip to explore the lake bottom - and see if he can find any signs of life.
He said: "If it exists it will be a sensation because the popular belief is that nothing can survive under the conditions as they exist at this height underwater."
