A houseproud mum has astonished officials in southern China by turning down a 2 million GBP bid to buy her run down tin shack to make way for a luxury office block.
Stubborn Yang Meilan built the seven-storey home out of concrete and corrugated tin 19 years ago when the land near Shenzhen, Guangdong province, was wild countryside.
Now planners are desperate to get their hands on her plot to make way for the rapidly expanding city's new business hub.
"I like it here. I built the house with my own hands. It might not be a palace but it suits me," said Meilan.
"They've offered me a fortune but I have my crops here, my home and my life," she added.
City officials are now hoping that Meilan's children can change her mind.
"It is a huge sum of money. She would become one of the richest people in the city overnight. We hope she will see sense," said one.
