Poohdungit: Elephant poo for gardeners

Marija Andric

It's one of the biggest, dirtiest jobs in the garden.

Now zoo bosses in Vienna, Austria, have realised that where there's muck there's brass and have begun selling elephant pooh to gardeners.

Each five litre bucket - which sells for just 3 GBP - will treat three or four rose beds in one go, explained keeper Ramon Salaun, who had the brainwave to sell the manure as "Elephant Luck."

"Elephant dung is not acidic and can be worked into the earth undiluted so it is an especially good fertilizer for roses," explained Ramon, who expects tuskers Drumbo, Tonga, Mongu, Numbi, and Kibo to produce 30 buckets a day.

"Elephants have bad digestion and the advantage of that is that the hay they eat comes out still intact in their dung," he added.
