Croatian cricket hits the BBC

Croatian Times

Most Croatians will look at you blankly if you hand them a cricket bat but thanks to a new book by Scottish author Angus Bell, Croatian cricket is emerging from obscurity.

Bell's book 'Batting On The Bosphorus' is making waves in Britain - even making an appearance on BBC Radio 4's prestigious Book of the Week show.

A focus of the book is the Sir William Hoste cricket club on the remote Adriatic island of Vis.

The Hoste cricket club was founded on the island of Vis after locals discovered a 200-year-old letter a British Royal Navy officer, Sir William Hoste, had sent his mother during the Napoleonic wars expressing a dream to form a cricket club on Vis.

His dream came true in March 2003 when locals inspired by the English Sailor's pipe-dream, founded a cricket club on Vis and named it after him.

Bell visited countries in Central and Eastern Europe where cricket was almost unknown, paying trips to all of their small cricket clubs.

The first program on the book will run live on the 21st July.
