Doctors at Split Hospital have performed laparoscopic surgery on gall bladders through the vaginas of three female patients in the first operations of that sort in Croatia.
Split surgery clinic head Vedran Radonic said today (Tues) all three operation had been conducted last weekend without pain or scars. Radonic said the hospital had been preparing for such operations for two years.
Each operation, which lasted an hour and a half half, was performed by two Split doctors,
Zdravko Perko and Zeljko Mimica, supported by Zoran Cala who came from Zagreb to help them.
Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimally-invasive surgery, is a modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incisions rather than the large incisions needed in traditional surgical procedures.
The first laparoscopic surgery on a gall bladder was performed in 2007 in France, and 300 operations of that kind have been performed around the world since then.
According to Radonic, Split hospital will very soon begin using laparoscopic surgery in other types of cases.
He also said doctors in nearby countries were interested in the surgery and Croatian doctors would soon begin teaching their colleagues in Bulgaria and Romania about it.
