Zagreb to have 225 new video surveillance cameras

The Zagreb government will install around 225 video surveillance cameras in the city in May that will watch nearby areas around the clock.

The cameras, each worth around 70,000 kunas or 9,444 Euros, will be installed at the most dangerous crossroads, streetlights, tram stations, businesses and public squares, the daily "Jutarnji list" has reported.

The concept and the funding have come from the city's "Zagrebparking" company, which says it will be able to monitor almost the entire city in cooperation with the police. They will be able to intervene much faster, for example, if an accident occurs, and no one will be able to flee from the scene of an accident without being punished.

Zagrebparking Director Mate Kraljevic said: "Our primary goal is to regulate traffic, and we also expect illegal parking to decrease by 100 per cent. We also think that fights and disturbances of public peace and order will considerably decrease. The cameras can zoom in and record the tiniest details, which will be of great help not only to us but also to the police."

The project will cost 14 million kunas or 1.889 million Euros.
