Croatia lost around 27 per cent of its honeybees during winter 2007/2008.
The Croatian Beekeepers Association (HPS) is reporting that around 80,000 honeybee colonies have been lost, which means a lost of 10 million Euros for Croatian beekeepers, the daily "Vecernji list" has reported.
The disappearance of bees in a certain location causes the accelerated disappearance of 20,000 herbal species that negatively affects the ecological balance there.
In response, HPS has joined project Coloss, which features 106 scientists from Europe, China, Canada, Egypt and the USA in four working groups.
The working groups are exchanging information, identifying the causes of honeybee losses and developing useful tools for beekeepers and veterinarians to use to prevent harm to beekeeping and biodiversity.
The project officially started in November 2008 and will end in June 2012. Croatia has two representatives on Coloss’ management board.
Three conferences have been organized, in Wageningen (the Netherlands), Athens and Belfast.
The next conference will be held in Zagreb on 3 and 4 March 2009. It is being organised by HPS and the Faculty of Agriculture at Zagreb University.
