REASeuro, a Dutch company that specialises in explosives, has begun removing and disposing of explosives in the sea in Split harbour.
The explosives experts began their work yesterday (Mon) after seven weeks of preparation and enclosed the "Matejuska" area of the city with a safety fence.
The firm will use a special boat to remove the explosives during the next three or four weeks.
The reason for the work is the recent discovery of munitions from World War II in the harbour bordering on Matejuska.
REASeuro head Ad von Riel said: "I have been in this business for the last 28 years and can confirm there have not been any uncontrolled explosions during our work but that does not mean they could not occur. That is the reason for our strict safety measures."
The firm will give the explosives it removes to the Ministry of Interior, which will destroy them.
REASeuro’s contract with the city is worth 2.5 million kunas or 337,000 Euros plus value- added tax (VAT).
