US vessel fined 8,524 Euros for polluting the Adriatic Sea

The American shipping company Crystal Cruises has been fined 62,000 kunas or 8,524 Euros because its vessel Crystal Serenity dumped ashes into the sea.

The Dubrovnik harbour-master’s office imposed the fine today (Weds).

Ministry of the Sea spokeswoman Marina Haluzan has confirmed that the Crystal Serenity skipper was questioned by Dubrovnik harbour-master office officials yesterday.

The ship’s captain and company representative have apologized for the pollution, claiming the ashes had been dumped into the sea because of a problem with one of the vessels’ engines.

The incident occurred last weekend near Lokrum Island near Dubrovnik when the US cruiser was leaving. A local beach was left covered by ashes.
