With snow about to hit the UK this weekend, British homeowners might blanch at the thought of having to sweep away the white stuff from their paths.

But spare a thought for this ski-shop in Altenmarkt, Austria, which was left with a 30,000 GBP bill after having to sweep its roof - by helicopter.

Bosses at the Atomic outlet feared that tons of snow sitting on top of their building was in danger of crashing through after conventional clean up techniques had failed.

So teams of workers shoveled snow into giant nets allowing chopper pilots to fly it away and dump it on the slopes.

"We would rather have used snow blowers because they are so much cheaper.

"But all we ended up doing was shifting the snow from one ends of the roof to the other - so we whistled up a helicopter to take the strain. It's not cheap but it works," said Atomic spokesman Keri.
