Three ice skaters who ignored warning not to skate on ice over an Austrian lake had to be rescued by helicopter after a huge chunk of ice broke free - and then started to fall apart as it floated away.
As these dramatic pictures show the three could only stand helplessly still in the middle of the free floating ice flow and hope that the rescuers would reach them in time.
A police spokesman that was involved with the rescue operation blasted the three who had put their lives at risk.
Insp. Walter Maier, 56, said: "They put their lives on the line for a bit of fun. They were warned not to go on the ice but went anyway."
He added that all three faced a bill for the helicopter flight because they had put themselves at risk by the venture.
Friends of the three that remained on the shore could only call for help as the massive 50 meter wide ice slab floated into the middle of the Woerthersee Lake in Carinthia and then started to break up.
By the time these pictures were taken the ice had already started to fall apart in the warmer water at the centre of the lake - with massive tears appearing through the structure as it gradually disintegrated.
The added risk was that the downdraft from the helicopter that flew to the site from Klagenfurt might disintegrate the ice faster - sending the trio into the icy water.
In the end all three that included a 66-year-old women were airlifted to safety and were released after treatment for cold and shock.
