Firefighters thought cyclist Anita Boller was taking the hiss when she dialed 999 to report coming face to face with a giant deadly snake as she rode through woodlands in Inningen, Germany.

But after using special heat sensors and temperature sensitive scanners the fire-fighters snared a seven foot long boa constrictor.

The reptile - believed to have been released by its owner - is now living in the local Augsburg Zoo snake house.

"We were a bit sceptical at first but she said the snake had been hanging down from a tree branch and she had literally been face to face with it.

"People buy young boas and then when they get to large to handle easily they just let them go," said a fire service spokesman.
