A baffled farmer dialed 999 when his tractor disappeared overnight - only to find he'd unwittingly sent it to the bottom of a lake after leaving the handbrake off.

A police search team eventually spotted the farm vehicle at the bottom of the crystal clear Lake Zug in Immensee, Switzerland.

"He felt a bit of a fool when we found it," said one officer after fire service rescue teams hauled it back to the surface.

"But not as foolish as he'll feel when he gets a bill for the rescue, the oil pollution and a ticket for dumping an environmental hazard," they added.

Rescuers used a crane to pull the tractor clear of the water after first putting a special net around it to stop any oil or other chemicals spreading to the rest of the lake.
