Snout of Order

Marija Andric

A farmer who left his pigs to starve to death because he was depressed has infuriated animal rights campaigners in Werndorf near Graz in  Austria, after escaping with just a 400 GBP fine.

Horrified vets found the bodies of 35 porkers during a routine inspection and other animals so thin their bones were sticking through their skin.

Farmer Paul Fiedler is now facing a lifetime ban on keeping animals.

Local council spokeswoman Barbara Fiala-Koeck said: "The fine's size is dependent on the income of the farmer, which in this case was very low as he was not a very good farmer."

Police spokesman Heimo Kordon said that the 25 live animals had been moved to another farm and added: "It is the worst thing I have seen in 26 years on the force.".
