Hole Truth

croatiantimes.com

Bungling power workers are in a hole lot of trouble after digging out massive tunnels under a pavement in northern China and forgetting to fill them in again.

Witnesses say the pavement suddenly collapsed while the town square in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, was packed with people, swallowing up two children who were out shopping with their mother.

The hole - 15 ft long, 15ft deep, and 12ft wide - was above part of a network of new electricity cables laid by workers a few weeks earlier.

Now city officials are inspecting the rest of the square to make sure it is safe.

"They apparently cut corners and failed to reinforce the foundations after they'd dug them out. We will be checking all their work now," said one.
