Treesy Does It

croatiantimes.com

Chinese builders didn't let a preservation order on a 100-year-old Banyan tree stop the building of this huge apartment building - they simply built the walls around it leaving holes for the branches.

The tree doesn't seem to have suffered yet and has become a local attraction at Youai village, in Nanning city, the capital of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

This snap shows where the 10 m high tree vanishes into the building at the fourth floor and then emerges on the other side.

The building was built last year and local council officials responsible for planning permission ruled that as the tree seem to be unharmed no laws had been broken – and said the building could remain.

But that did not impress emergency services who said that the tree was a lightning risk and also warned that its roots could damage the building foundation.

The decision on the building and the trees future is expected in a month.
