This is the tragic snap of a Chinese schoolboy who drowned while playing in a river at Yingshan village, in Annan city, in southeast China’s Fujian province.
The 13-year-old Xiong Liu had fallen in and drowned but nobody in the village wanted to fish the body out after a driver on a nearby road spotted the corpse and raised the alarm.
In the end businessmen Hsin Tsao called local police who asked villagers to take them to the corpse in a boat so that they could recover the body.
But they refused – unless they were paid 300 GBP for the work.
One told local media he didn't want to have bad luck by having the corpse of the young boy in his boat and expected to be compensated for his trouble.
In the end police called the family of the child who lived further upstream and had already reported him missing – and they arrived and dragged the body out of the water.
The corpse had already been in the water for three days by that time.
