Gate Fall of China

croatiantimes.com

Horrified witnesses watched on as a huge antique-style gate collapsed, burying two women under tons of rubble and timber, say police in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, eastern China.

The 60ft high gate had been built less than a year ago by city officials, as a replica of Ming dynasty entrance arch engraved with symbols of good luck and prosperity.

But accident investigators have revealed that the huge timbers supporting the structure - used in local ceremonies and rituals - had rotted where they met the concrete foundations.

"There had been no attempt to weather proof the timber and it just rotted where it stood.

"It got weaker and weaker until it could no longer support the very heavy structure above it," explained one.
