Great Long Haul of China

croatiantimes.com

This is the great long haul of China waiting more than 740 million travellers as they cross-cross the country trying to get home for their six day Moon Festival national holiday this week.

Thousands of highways have faced complete gridlock, like this huge Shanghai-Kunming Expressway from eastern China where drivers were stranded for so long they abandoned their cars to walk their dogs, got for a meal in local restaurants or simply chat to other trapped families.

But it was even worse at rail and bus stations where would be passengers came to blows as they fought for seats on trains and coaches.

Experts say 740 million people will attempt to travel hundreds of miles across China this week as migrant workers attempt to get home for the week-long official autumn break.

Motorists have been warned on China's social networking internet sites to take adult nappies, mineral water, badminton racquets for sport, food, sleeping bags and laptops for keeping in touch

Economist Li Daokui explained: "The government has suspended all road tolls for the holiday so people have gone crazy.

"They'll end up spending their entire holiday going nowhere on the fast lane of a motorway."
