Bridging Moan

croatiantimes.com

When safety officials walled up this bridge in western China when it snapped in the middle, locals were determined to still take their chances over the great fall of China.

The bridge near to Languan, Shaanxi province, was washed out by a series of floods in 2010 and was considered so dangerous that engineers sealed off both ends.

But determined locals took sledgehammers to the walls.

And now - after two years of waiting for repairs - hundreds continue to use the bridge every day despite the safety warnings rather than take a 10 mile detour to the next nearest crossing.

"We have to cross the river and until they build a new bridge, this is all there is," said one.

"It is extremely dangerous and could collapse at any time. There are plans for a new crossing," said a Town Hall spokesman.
