A man was seriously injured when he stood at the top of a six-metre shaft to take a leak in Essen, Germany.

Manfred Berger, 43, fell down the shaft that was being built as an air vent after he climbed over safety fencing around the hole.

But he slipped as he relieved himself, ending up seriously injured at the bottom.

A passer by who heard him groaning raised the alarm and a rescuer abseiled down the shaft to help him be lifted out on a stretcher.

He needed to be strapped in and the stretcher tilted so it could fit and he was then taken in a serious condition to hospital.
