Thinned Peaks

croatiantimes.com

City planners have really set their sights high for a development in northern China - demolishing an entire 1,500ft high mountain range to make way for new buildings.

Builders using massive excavating machines are slowing grinding down 700 of the Qingbaishi peaks overlooking industrial hub Lanzhou, in Gansu province, to make way for an extension to the city.

"Because Lanzhou developed in river valley, space was limited and everything that can be built on already has been," explained one official.

"The only place left to go was up," they added.

The project aims to provide 25 square kilometres of building land for new homes and factories for the city's booming textile, metal and chemical industries.

"We'll add more space by using the mountain rubble to fill in some of the valleys.

"It may not look pretty now but the new development will be beautiful," promised an official.
