Bullet Proof: Swiss passenger dumped forgotten bullets in rubbish bin

Horrified Swiss honeymooner Jean Guillaume has told a Swiss newspaper how he feared he might be arrested for being a terrorist after he climbed on an Air France plane to Paris - and discovered once they had taken off that he had forgotten to take a pack of live bullets out of his rucksack.

Jean Guillaume, 28, a keen member of his local gun club, said: "I sometimes have a few bullets left over after shooting practice and I take them home and then bring them back to use the next time. It's perfectly legal as I have a license but obviously not legal at all to take them on a plane.

"I had managed to go through all the security checks and they had even removed a bottle of water saying it was a security risk – but they didn't notice the bullets which I had forgotten. My blood ran cold when I saw them because I realised I could end up in very serious trouble.

"As soon as we landed I went to the nearest bin and dumped them inside."

Weapons expert Daniel Guthans from the German Journal of Weapons said that even though the young man did not have a gun the bullets were easily opened and the powder inside was highly explosive. He also said that without a pressure sealed container the bullets could have gone off at any time."

The man from the Swiss Canton of Waadt said that the security officials operating the scanner device at Genf when the incident happened in October last year had seemed to be more interested in messing around with each other than in properly checking the luggage.

He said he had initially decided to keep quiet but then felt it was only fair to speak out to expose the security breach.

A security spokesman at the airport said that they were investigating the allegations and declined to comment further.
