A ham-fisted trucker lost his load of 21 tons of pork knuckle when he overturned at a roundabout in Haag, Germany.

Police say driver Manfred Sommer lost control when he went into the bend too quickly, shifting the load of ham hocks hanging in the freezer container.

Firefighters and police spent more than an hour unloading the hams into a second truck before sending them on their way.

"When the truck crashed its deep freeze stopped working," said a fire service spokesman

Normally this would be fatal for the cargo, but as it was below freezing outside anyway the firm thought they'd take a chance on a second truck,"

"We had to work fast in extremely cold conditions to try and save the load and to get the road open again. The lorry was also blocking the snow ploughs getting past to clear the snow from the road.

"We managed to get the load into a new lorry which was sent but I don't know if the load could be saved.

"Luckily nobody was injured in the accident. It had been a very heavy load and the sharp bend had just sent the lorry toppling onto its side. There was nothing the driver could do to avoid this happening." they added.
