Going Home: The Babies Rescued From Human Traffickers

croatiantimes.com

The shocking human consequences of the human trafficking trade have been out on show in southern China - with an identity parade of 12 babies freed by police when they smashed a huge child smuggling gang.

Police believe the gang - in Heyuan, Guangdong province - are responsible for hundreds of baby abductions across China, either stealing to order or snatching babies 'on spec' and selling them on to other gangs.

These 12 tots - all about one month old - were being kept in an underground nursery found by police when they arrested 33 members of the trafficking gang.

Some stolen babies are sold to families who can't have children, while others are sold to be raised in virtually slavery or the sex industry.

More then 500 officers had spend three months tracking down key members of the group before moving in.

Now they are trying to find the youngsters' parents and have appealed for help from the public.

"For the first time we are letting people see the real victims of these appalling crimes - tiny, babies, doomed to a life of goodness knows what," said a police spokesman.

"The children are being well cared for but it is our intention to get each one back to their own family," they added.
