Park officials in eastern China have set up life-sized dummy police officers to stop people using a local beauty spot as a makeshift loo.

The remote riverside plot - in Nanjing, Jiangsu province - is such a hideaway that visitors use it whenever they get a sudden call of nature.

"It is both anti-social and unhygienic. This spoils it for people who just want to relax or watch the river," explained one official.

"We can't police it round the clock so we put some replicas there to put people off," they added.

And so far the terra-potty army seems to be working, locals conform.

"It has been disgusting in the past. You never knew what you were going to tread in.

"Now it's much cleaner," said one.
