Croatian sailors threatens to transfer their money to other countries

Around 200 Croatian sailors held a protest at Split’s main waterfront this morning (Weds) over their health- and pension-insurance status.
The sailors threatened to change their place of residence to other countries and open off-shore bank accounts there if the government failed to help them. An offshore bank account provides financial and legal advantages such as low or no taxation.
Many athletes use them to avoid taxes in their home countries.
If the sailors make good on their threat, it could cost Croatia as much as 400 million Euros, the national media have reported.
The sailors have claimed their tax status is unacceptable.
They need to be at sea at least 183 days a year in order to be exempt from paying taxes on income they do not earn in Croatia.
They must also continue to pay for their health insurance even though they cannot make use of the national health-care system while at sea.
The sailors want to meet with appropriate government officials to discuss their problems.
