Bars and restaurants losing business due to anti-smoking law
Croatian Times
Croatian Restaurateurs Association head Miroslav Folnegovic Hulc has claimed restaurants and bars in continental (northern) Croatia have lost business recently.
Folnegovic said today (Tues) the businesses had suffered a 50-to-60 per cent decline since the new anti-smoking law had gone into effect on 6 May.
He said bars and restaurants in Dalmatia had had better results because of the tourist season and because most of them had outdoor terraces where people could smoke.
Folnegovic said: "People just do not want to go to places where they cannot smoke, which especially affects establishments in shopping malls because they have no terraces. Although Croatian bars and restaurants employ around 200,000 workers and are an important part of the national economy, the government has not taken any steps to help us."
Croatian restaurateurs have asked Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor for assistance to avoid ending the year with huge problems.
