UKF fund grants €41,000 Euros to Croat researching nano solar cells

Croatian Times

The "Unity Through Knowledge Fund" will contribute 300,000 kunas or 41,000 Euros to the "silicon nanocrystals solar cells ... Properties and characterization" project.

It is being led by Croat Ivana Capan from the Physics Department at "Rudjer Boskovic" Institute.

The money is available for a two-year period in the framework of the programme "Young Researchers and Professionals".

The main purpose of the project is to establish the independent research leadership of the main applicant and the necessary scientific infrastructure with the objective of conducting research on advanced solar-cell materials. The project will result in transfer of knowledge and skills to Croatia through collaboration with a group from the University of Manchester and Polish company Cemat Silicon.

The main objective is to investigate properties of advanced materials for solar cells, so-called "nano solar cells". Although silicon nano-crystals have been studied extensively in the past few years, this research is mainly focused on the structural properties of silicon nano-crystals in an oxide matrix.

A capacitance technique such as Laplace Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (Laplace DLTS) will be used for the very first time for studying electrical properties of silicon nano-crystals in the oxide matrix.

The information that could be obtained with this technique is of crucial importance for the application of silicon nano-crystals in future generations of solar cells and can help development of Croatia’s solar industry.

The UKF is a Croatian state fund whose specific mission is to unite homeland and Diaspora knowledge potentials in order to face the challenge of building a knowledge-based society.
