Court to decide whether brewery strike is legal

Croatian Times

A court in Osijek will decide today (Mon) whether the 18-day strike at the Osijek brewery is legal.

The decision will determine whether brewery owner Ivan Komak must begin negotiations with the strikers. So far he has refused to do so, claiming the protest is illegal.

Two hundred of the firm’s 214 workers have rejected a proposed collective contract that would cut their wages and reduce the number of jobs by 100, representatives of the Croatian Association of Trade Unions that heads the protest said.

Komak said that the reason for the wage cuts was the introduction of performance-based incentives that should stimulate workers, Croatian daily Jutarnji List reported. He added that while the factory employed too many workers, the surplus would not be fired but laid off and rehired as needed.

He estimated that the damage caused by the strike would be between 690,000 and 1,380,000 Euros, with long-terms costs hard to predict. Strike organizers, however, claimed that the damage was minimal and that workers were more than ready to resume production with zeal and make up for lost days.

The protest at Osijek brewery is one of several that have taken place in Croatia over the past two weeks.
