Government preparers measures to strengthen the economy

Croatian Times

Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said today (Tues) the government was preparing a new package of measures to strengthen the economy and help companies in financial difficulty.

She added that the government would present the package before Easter on 4 April.

In an interview on Croatian radio, Kosor dismissed opposition parties' allegations that the government was not doing enough to deal with the economic crisis. She claimed the government knew what it was doing.

But, asked about the crisis tax, Kosor said the tax on four per cent of all incomes higher than 6,000 kunas or 819 Euros a month would remain in force.

The Croatian government has decided to abolish part of the crisis tax introduced in August 2009 because of recession and lack of state revenue.

The tax of two percent on all pensions and other income higher than 3,000 kunas or 409 Euros a month will be abolished from 1 July. Kosor believes the measure will stimulate consumption.

Kosor rejected opposition demands for an early general election. She believes such a move would be bad for Croatia’s EU accession negotiations.
