One-third of Croatia´s unemployed are young people

Young people aged 25 to 29 constitute one-third of the unemployed in Croatia.
Of 317,600 people registered with the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ), 175,000 are women. Among districts, Split-Dalmatia district has the highest number of unemployed residents.
But the fact that this February’s 18 per cent unemployment rate was the highest in five years was not the most troubling thing, Goran Radman, the vice president of the National Competitiveness Council said.
More worrisome was that only a small percentage of the population was actually working.
Only 37 per cent of Croatia’s eligible population was employed, making Croatians the "most non-working" people in Europe," he said.
At the Open Integration Day conference organized by the firm King ICT in Zagreb on 17 March, Radman warned that entrance into the European Union might pose an added challenge for small Croatian companies that were not competitive.
He also criticized the government’s handling of the crisis and called for harsher measures, including more "painful cuts" in expenditures.
