Activists protest against EBRD in Zagreb

Croatian Times

With a symbolic release of 50 black balloons with CO2 written on them, environmental activists gathered to protest at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development conference (ERDB) in Zagreb’s Marshal Tito Square, yesterday (Thurs).

The protestors from Bank Watch and Zelene Akcije (Green Action) warn that EBRD has numerous harmful projects that stimulate the use of "dirty" fossil fuels such as coal in Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania and neighbouring Croatia.

Green Action wants EBRD to influence the Croatian government to stop the promotion of the building of a coal thermal power plant that should instead run on renewable energy sources.

Toni Vidan - Green Action energy programme leader - emphasized that EBRD should explain to Croatian politicians that the thermal power plants and nuclear plants currently part of the government's energy strategy are neither economically nor environmentally acceptable.

Around 20 volunteers from as many European countries participated in the protest performance. After it was over, they distributed black balloons to the financial experts that had gathered for the conference, Croatian Daily Vecernji List writes.
