CEFTA customs reductions in question because of Serbia-Kosovo relations

The internal trade agreement amongst signatories of the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) has been blocked for more than a year and half due to Serbia’s fight against Kosovo’s independence, putting into question the further reduction on customs duties that was supposed to take effect on July 1st.

Further liberalisation of trade for members of CEFTA was expected in July, but since Serbia does not recognize Kosovo and its institutions, it is uncertain whether the expected duty reductions will take effect.

Croatian daily Jutarnji List reports that all Serbian ministries in Belgrade - except for the Foreign Affairs Ministry – are advocating turning a blind eye, even though Serbia is demanding that merchandise from Kosovo is not imported with a tag reading Made in Kosovo, but rather with a UNMIK (UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo) stamp.

Miroslav Bozic, from Ministry of Agriculture, said: "Further liberalisation of trade is in everyone’s interest. Croatia is already making a big surplus in trade with CEFTA countries, which make up 25 percent of our total agricultural trade."

"All additional agreements made between the members a year and a half ago are temporarily frozen."
