Drastic budget cuts could affect many social rights

The Croatian Minister of Health and vice president of the government Darko Milinovic has caused controversy following his statement that a radical budget rebalance could possibly affect many social rights.
The Minister mentioned possible cuts to health insurance, decreasing pensions and salaries in the public sector between 10 to 15 per cent and digging into social services, the Croatian daily Vecernji List writes. Although he used the word possibly, the statement has sent a ripple of panic amongst the public.
Three months ago, the Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor announced her economic recovery plan, a part of which has not yet been implemented. Kosor said that unions have been blocking the resolution to use the money allocated for vacation and Christmas bonuses and child vouchers in order to jump start production and help unemployment.
She said the government would go ahead with the budget rebalance planned for the summer, the Croatian daily Vecernji List writes.
