Croatian wood industry makes positive gains

Croatia’s wood industry has seen an 11.5 per cent increase in exports totalling 316.3 million Euros in the first six months of the year, data from Croatian Chamber of Economy (HGK) shows.
At the same time, imports decreased by 19.4 per cent to 205.6 million Euros. In the first half of the year, Croatia exported 940,500 tonnes of wood products and furniture, and imported 209.05 tonnes.
The Director of the Agriculture, Food Industry and Forestry department of HGK Bozica Markovic said that despite the effects of recession, the timber industry has consistently recorded a surplus in foreign trade.
She added that the industry was one of the first victims of the crisis in mid-2008, when orders from foreign markets dropped. Some 70 per cent of the wood processing industry’s income comes from foreign markets and the increase in orders toward the end of last year has contributed to the positive trends.
She further added that a series of government measures had contributed not only to the maintenance of the industry’s competitiveness but also to employment in the sector, the portal Business writes.
