Croatia could meet electrical energy needs from domestic production by 2020

Domestic production could meet all of Croatia’s electricity needs by year 2020, the Chairman of the Board of the state electrical company HEP Leo Begovic said at the opening of the new hydroelectric plant HE Lesce on Tuesday.
The country currently imports 20 per cent of its electrical energy, an amount that is expected to decrease by seven per cent once HE Lesce begins to work at full capacity in six months.
Croatian PM Jadranka Kosor opened the 700 million kuna (96 million Euros) project on river Dobra for a trial run yesterday. The plant is expected to produce 98 GWh of electrical energy. None of the representatives of the ecological associations opposing the project were present at the opening, the daily Jutarnji List writes.
"This is one of the projects that will contribute to Croatia’s energy independence and I congratulate all those who participated in its realisation," the PM said. Kosor further thanked HEP for this year’s positive results that eliminated the company’s 1.7 billion kuna (233.5 million Euros) debt.
"Thanks to these efforts, the electricity prices will not go up by the end of 2010, which is a big contribution in this difficult year both to the economy and the citizens," Kosor said.
HEP’s Chairman of the Board Begovic said the company is planning further development of thermo and hydroelectrical plants and that a public tender for their construction will be announced by the end of the year.
