Germany and China interested in building Hungary-Rijeka railway

Croatian Times

Germany and China are interested in building a railway line stretching from the Hungarian border to the coastal town of Rijeka in what would be the biggest infrastructure project of the new government.

Heavily indebted Croatia could not finance the 4.6 billion Euro project alone and is likely to seek outside help through concession, daily Vecernji List writes.

Both German company DB International – part of German railways Deutsche Bahn – and China have expressed interest in taking part in the project. For China, Rijeka port and the railway would provide a way to get their products onto European markets.

Croatia has not yet decided on the concessionary model, the daily writes. Once it makes its decision, the process could last a while.

Just the preparation of the project could last up to four years or the entire mandate of the new government elected in December. The best case scenario is that the construction starts in 2016, which would mean the railway would be complete by 2025.

Such big investment is expected to create new employment opportunities, considering that experts believe that every billion invested in the railway means 17,500 new jobs.

Considering this project requires 4.6 billion Euros, this could mean 80,000 new jobs.
