Croatia drops one spot on Index of Economic Freedom

Croatia has dropped one spot on the Economic Freedom index and takes 83rd place amongst 184 world economies.
The index measures 10 areas including business, trade, fiscal, financial, monetary, investment, labour freedom, government spending, property rights and freedom from corruption.
With an index of 60.9 points, Croatia remains amongst countries with moderate economic freedom.
Compared to other European economies, Croatia’s grades are amongst the lowest and they fall under the regional average. The drop in evaluation can be credit to irresponsible state spending despite high taxation, Croatian daily Dnevnik writes.
Croatia received best grades in the categories of trade, fiscal and monetary freedoms. The investment freedom received a solid grade, with a warning that inefficient bureaucracy and unpredictable legislation are the biggest hurdles to investment.
Out of the neighbouring countries, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina rank close with Croatia, while Montenegro, Slovenia, Albania, Hungary and Macadenoia are ahead.
Hong Kong and Singapur took the top spots for the 18th year in a row. They are followed by Australia and New Zealand.
The Wall Street Journal and The Heritage Foundation have been publishing the Index since 1995.
