Croatia’s economy shrunk faster than estimated in the second quarter, confirming that the country is in recession, final data released by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics revealed on Thursday. Economic newswire RTT News reports that GDP fell 2.2 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, faster than the 2.1 percent contraction recorded in preliminary estimates. In the first quarter and the fourth quarter, the economy contracted 1.3 percent and 0.4 percent respectively. Household final consumption expenditure was down 3.4 percent annually, and public consumption slipped 0.2 percent. Consumption of non-profit institution serving households saw a decrease of 1 percent during the quarter and gross fixed capital formation was lower by 5.9 percent compared to last year. RTT reports that Croatia, which is to join the EU next year, hasn’t seen any growth in the last three years. Meanwhile, the IMF says it expects Croatia’s economy to shrink 0.5 percent this year.
