Dubrovnik locals are up in arms over proposals to build a new golf course, in a row dating back five years.
In 2007, Israeli businessman Aaron Frenkel and Australian golfer Greg Norman splashed out 1 bln euros on a 765-acre-site on top of a hill, with the intention of turning it into a luxury golf course. But it was quickly rounded on by locals who were angered by the course being visible from Dubrovnik’s old town, CroatiaTraveller.com reports.
Now locals have started a petition to block further work on the site. "The hill is not only a strategic point but has symbolic significance to the people of Dubrovnik who fought for control of the hill in 1991″ against Serbian-Montenegrin forces.
It’s a matter of "how we strategically plan the future," said opposition leader Enes Cerimagic. Joining in the protest are Dubrovnik mayor Andro Vlahusic and bishop Mate Uzinic.
